Assignment L

CS 202-00, Carleton College, Winter 2013

Prof. Joshua R. Davis, , Goodsell 204, x4473

For Wednesday (Day 17): First, read the fourth writing assignment (Make Your Solutions Self-Explanatory) on the course web site. You may also want to read Writing Sample. Notably, you can understand all of the math in that Writing Sample, even though it was written for a different course, years ago, and you don't know what textbook it's referring to! There are no exercises to do in either of these tutorials.

Once you have read one or both tutorials, prove this statement: If p and q are distinct primes, then logpq is irrational. (Hint: This is a fancier version of KRH 4.3 #11. At some point you might want to use the fundamental theorem of arithmetic.) Write or type your proof on its own sheet of paper, using your best possible style. Be sure to use all of the lessons of the writing assignments: Writing in complete sentences with subjects, verbs, and punctuation, etc. Also use this new writing tip: You should not begin any sentence with mathematical notation. Instead, find some way to begin each sentence with a plain English word, spelled out in letters. You will submit your proof on Wednesday. I will comment on your proof and return it to you for revision — one or more times, until we agree that it is well written.

For Friday (Day 18): Do problems 15, 21, 23, 25a, 33b, 41 in Section 4.3 of the KHR textbook, to be submitted with the rest of your homework due that day.
