CS 358: Day 01

Carleton College, Joshua R. Davis

Today's homework is in two parts. The second part is to practice Python if you need to. We start using Python to do actual (but small) work in Homework 03. The first part of today's homework is the following questionnaire. Before completing this questionnaire, you should participate in discussion, view the four video lectures, and read the syllabus. If technical problems prevent you from doing any of those tasks, then say so in the questionnaire.

To complete the questionnaire, send me e-mail, at the address above, with your answers to these questions (in the body of the message — not an attachment):

  1. What would you like to be called in class? (My answer would be "Josh".)
  2. Home town, state, country:
  3. Expected graduation year:
  4. Expected major(s):
  5. What time zone are you in? How many hours ahead of or behind Carleton is it?
  6. I'm thinking of hosting two separate discussions. Please tell me your time restrictions for MWF afternoons. Would you rather have discussion at our appointed class time (MWF mid-morning) or in MWF afternoons?
  7. Did you encounter technical problems in the discussion, lectures, syllabus, etc.? How optimistic or pessimistic are you about meeting the technology requirements for this course?
  8. Do you know Python well enough to complete small assignments in it? Which other languages do you know that well?
  9. Did you find CS 202/Math 236 to be easy, moderate, or difficult? (Or have you not taken it?)
  10. Did you find Math 232 to be easy, moderate, or difficult? (Or have you not taken it?)
  11. Which of the following courses have you taken? (If none, that's okay. :)
    1. CS 208: Organization and Architecture
    2. CS 252: Algorithms
    3. CS 254: Computability and Complexity
    4. CS 352: Advanced Algorithms
    5. Math 261 or 361: Complex Analysis
    6. Math 265: Probability
    7. Math 332: Advanced Linear Algebra
    8. Math 341: Partial Differential Equations
    9. physics or physical chemistry?
  12. Is there anything else that you want to tell me right now?
